What’s The Back Up Plan When Things Go Horribly Wrong? By BARRY McGOEY

Yonkers Fire Local 628This last week things went horribly wrong for the people of the City of Yonkers, when a routine  construction project to increase fiber optic cable supply in our region ruptured one of the most important water mains serving New York’s 4th most populous city.

Over 50,000 Yonkers residents were without water for days.  Two of our city’s hospitals: St. Joseph’s Medical Center and St. John’s Riverside Hospital lacked water to run critical equipment, cooling and air conditioning systems, operate toilets, and more.  Businesses were shut and employees told to stay home until the emergency was over.  This was not just an inconvenience, but rather a crisis that paralyzed many parts of the city.

Response to Murtagh's Letter BY JOSÉ A. CARABALLO

Yonkers_Fire_local_628As the President of The Yonkers Firefighters of Local 628 I DEMAND an immediate apology from Councilman Murtagh to the members of The Yonkers Fire Department for the comment made in his letter (The budget 2010-2011). Fire at 55 School Street BY MARGARET SETTERHOLM

SETTERHOLM_fire at 55 School St. 004  YONKERS, NY, July 5, 2010 -- Just now (approximately 11:15 AM), there was a fire at 55 School St.  The tenant wasn't there.  The building had smoke throughout - I began smelling it and didn't see it in my apt, and I checked all my appliances to be sure none of them were overheating (gives off a burning smell) and none of them were plugged in, and the oven was off - you can be sure I'm so damn careful what with disaster relief work in my background.  The smell went away in my apt and then fire trucks arrived, and a cherry picker came right above my apartment!
