Around the Clock Repair Effort Completed; and

Sewage Discharge has Ceased

TARRYTOWN, NY – August 10, 2012 -- The Westchester County Department of Health is alerting swimmers, boaters, windsurfers, kayakers and other recreational water users that the advisory for the Hudson River will be lifted this evening, August 10,  at 11:00 PM from Croton Point Park and points south in Westchester. Repairs to the broken sewer line in Tarrytown have been completed and sewage discharges into the Hudson River have ceased.

Due to the urgency of the situation, crews worked around the clock to make the repairs as quickly as possible. The repair required the bypass of chlorinated sewage that was released into the Hudson River at Sleepy Hollow since yesterday morning. There was also a discharge of chlorinated sewage into the Hudson River at Yonkers as a result of the line break. It is estimated that approximately 3.4 million gallons of chlorinated sewage was discharged into the Hudson River as a result.

As a precautionary measure, the Health Department had issued the advisory for recreational use Wednesday evening due to the sewage discharge. The advisory is being lifted Friday evening, August 10, 2012, because the elapsed time since the discharge stopped would have allowed it to dissipate.
