YONKERS, NY - The City of Yonkers begins upgrading traffic and pedestrian signals this week at a dozen major roadway intersections in the City. Mayor Mike Spano is overseeing the Yonkers Department of Engineering installation of LED traffic lights, 30-second countdown pedestrian signals as well as stretch cabinets and state of the art computerized signal controllers. The $200,000 project is funded in part by a New York State Multi-Modal grant awarded to the city.
The signal improvements, specifically the LED lights, will generate a 70% energy reduction as compared to the standards bulbs typically used. The lights being installed are brighter and will last longer, creating a safer intersection for both drivers and pedestrians.
“As always, Yonkers is working to ensure our infrastructure is more efficient and as safe as possible,” says Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano. “These necessary upgrades are smart, allowing our City to save money and energy, while protecting local drivers and residents.”
Following are the Yonkers intersections to be updated with LED lights and 30-second countdown pedestrian signals in the coming weeks:
Yonkers Ave at Walnut Street
