Assemblyman Mike Spano: U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Must Address Flooding in Yonkers

YONKERS< NY -- Assemblyman Mike Spano (D,C,WF-Yonkers), called on the United States Army Corps of Engineers (ACOE) to release their findings of a Reconnaissance Phase Study that they conducted and propose a plan of action to remedy the on-going flooding situation in Yonkers.  

“We can’t prevent Mother Nature’s wrath, but we can mitigate the effects on our residents,” Spano said. While there is no easy solution to a problem of this magnitude, it’s critical for a real plan to be created - simply continuing to conduct more studies is not enough. Unfortunately, Yonkers is once again facing a crisis due to inaction.”

Statement from NY Attorney General’s Office on DoJ’s Lawsuit to Block AT&T, T-Mobile Merger

Today we enjoy the calm after the storm. The sky is clear and we have a pleasant breeze. It is a perfect day to go outside and breathe air that is cleaner than usual. You can also leave your apartment windows open.

The contrast, of course, is with last week, when Hurricane Irene dropped millions of gallons of water over the Eastern Seaboard, starting with Puerto Rico, and heading north to Canada, finally dissipating over Quebec. Hurricanes have no regard for political boundaries. Landfalls slow them down but do not stop them.

Money has taken over our political system in a way that is simply horrifying.  Special interest groups in particular corporations, unions, Wall Streeters and bankers dominate our politics.  They have devastated this country economically, yet they have gotten away with it because they choose and finance our candidates for low and high public office.  We complain but do nothing about this situation and feel helpless. 

But we are not helpless.  Because of our numbers, we have in our power the ability to amend the Constitution of the United States to vastly limit the power of money to manipulate and control the electoral process.  Let’s do it.  Those in our society who unfairly use the power of money to oppress us do not have to prevail.  They are vastly outnumbered by the backbone of our nation, the middle class, and by others who are similarly outraged by the power of money to oppress us.

Statement on Flooding in Yonkers By JOE CROTTY

Yonkers neighborhoods, especially those adjacent to the Bronx River were once again crippled by horrible flooding yesterday.  Homes were wrecked and personal possessions were destroyed.  Thankfully, no lives were lost.

Unfortunately, this is not an experience that happened just this past weekend because of the strong force of Hurricane Irene.  Residents in many parts of Yonkers and many here in East Yonkers have had this happen frequently during storms that were not nearly as potent or as noteworthy to the media as Hurricane Irene.

By doing so, real estate taxes can and will be reduced within four years and I affirm that I will not seek a second term if I fail.

He is the designee of the Working Family Party. Evan inlaw is married to Tamika Inlaw, who, until but a few days ago presided over the Yonkers Chapter of the NAACP as its president. She advised she had to step down in order to afford Chuck Lesnick her endorsement for Mayor of Yonkers in the upcoming Democrat Primary of September 13, 2011. Mr Lesnick, is the president of the Yonkers City Council and is also engaged in a three way Democrat Primary challenge for the Democrat Party’s designation. Mr. Lesnick goes up against Bob Flower, and the Democrat Convention designee and present New York State Assemblyman Mike Spano.

UPDATE 4 (SUN - 12 NOON) - Hurricane Irene Information for Yonkers

The city of Yonkers is currently under a FLOOD WARNING issued by the National Weather Service. Hurricane and Tropical Storm Warnings have expired. 

Danger of high winds, falling trees and limbs, power outages and especially flooding persist. Residents are urged to take caution. 

Governor Cuomo Announces Closure of the Tappan Zee Bridge

 

Governor Andrew Cuomo today announced that the Tappan Zee Bridge is closed due to flooding on the New York State Thruway. The Thruway northbound between Exits 8 (Tarrytown) and 17 (Harriman) and southbound between Exits 17 (Newburgh) and 12 (West Nyack) continue to be closed due to flooding. 

The Hudson River bridges north of the Tappan Zee Bridge remain open with moderate sustained winds. This includes the Bear Mountain Bridge, Newburgh-Beacon Bridge, Mid-Hudson Bridge, Kingston-Rhinecliff Bridge, and the Rip Van Winkle Bridge.
