Schools Open - Drive Carefully BY Det. Sgt. Patrick McCormack

Yonkers, NY, August 31, 2010 -- The Yonkers Police Department will be participating in the “Schools Open – Drive Carefully” traffic safety campaign in conjunction with AAA New York.   Motorists are reminded to use caution and watch for school children who will be returning to school here in Yonkers on 09/07/10.  These children are particularly vulnerable because younger children will be going to school for the first time and returning students are preoccupied with seeing friends.  Members of the Yonkers Police Department Traffic Division and patrol units will be monitoring school bus and pedestrian traffic during this campaign and throughout the school year.  Any violations will be strictly enforced, particularly passing stopped school buses which are actively picking up and dropping off school children.  Parents and children are urged to cross all streets safely by obeying traffic signals, looking both ways before crossing and only crossing at corners.

The MTA cannotcontinue to operate in the dark while passing the burden of its financial mismanagementdown to riders with increased fares. While the Comptroller’s audit is a step in the right direction, I continue to call for a full, comprehensive forensic audit of the entire MTA tobring further transparency and accountability to its operations.”

Once again, we take pen in hand (figuratively) to criticize the actions and inactions of the Charter Revision Commission. We do that not because there is overwhelming public interest in the subject at this time, but because there is an issue of trust and credibility here which should be discussed openly.

In Memoriam: Audrey Roshkind

Audrey Roshkind, a longtime Yonkers resident, passed away at home on August 27, 2010. Born in The Bronx to Harry and Rose Berkowitz, Mrs. Roshkind was raised and attended public schools in her native borough. Mrs. Roshkind was predeceased by her husband Erwin of forty-five years, and is survived by her beloved children, Dr.Carol Roshkind of Monroe, NY, and Mark Roshkind of Manhattan. Mrs. Roshkind's contributions as resident of the City of Yonkers, County of Westchester, and State of New York are extensive throughout her forty-three years of public service.

Yonkers Police Department Blotter - August 30, 2010 BY Det. Sgt. Patrick McCormack

Yonkers, NY, August 30, 2010 -- On 08-29-10 at approximately 4:24 a.m., 2nd Precinct Police Officers Charles Bowen and Jimmy Diodati were working in plainclothes and responded to the area of Cumberland Drive and Westmoreland Drive on a report of suspicious males looking inside of vehicles.  The officers were advised that the suspects fled the area after triggering an alarm to a parked vehicle.  The officers canvassed the area and observed a male (later identified as Brenton Stitchell, a 26 year old black male from 4160 Baychester Avenue in The Bronx) and they began to conduct a surveillance of the suspect.

Gillibrand and Hall Announce Initiative to Extend “Work Opportunity Tax Credit” for Businesses that Hire Unemployed Veterans Set to Expire End of 2010

New Windsor, NY, August 30, 2010 -- With nearly 20 percent of recent Hudson Valley veterans under the age 30 looking for work, U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) today joined with Rep. John Hall (D-NY) and Hudson Valley veterans at the National Purple Heart Hall of Honor to announce a new effort to make tax credits for businesses that hire recent veterans permanent. The Work Opportunity Tax Credit that Senator Gillibrand helped establish last year encourages businesses to hire recently-returned troops from Iraq and Afghanistan in exchange for a 40 percent credit on the first $6,000 paid to a veteran. The tax credit is set to expire at the end of this year.

I am a strong believer in the importance of setting the record straight.  I do not ignore inaccurate or incomplete statements about me or my record.

For example, on August 26 I read a blogger’s article mentioning me in a way I did not appreciate.  The blogger, who is associated with Columbia University, wrote:  “For good measure, Ed Koch a conservative Democratic former mayor of New York who frequently supports Republican candidates has also written in support of the proposed Islamic Center.”

He's movin' on out of NYC.

Yep, that's right. Three of 'em. One was an alligator; the second, a lizard; the third, an iguana.

The alligator was caught after supposedly hiding under a Datsun in Queens. But that wasn't the whole story. To get the scoop for The Spoof readers, reporter Gail Farrelly headed to the animal shelter where the gator had been taken. She was able to get a one-on-one interview.

In Memoriam: Virgina R. (Jeannie) Prota

Prota, Virginia R.(Jeannie) 85, passed away Wednesday, August 25, 2010 at Calvary Hospital, Bronx, New York, after a 6 year battle with lung cancer. She was surrounded by her family.  She was born in Yonkers, New York on March 10, 1925 to Fannie (Flower) and Anthony Eletto. Her identical twin sister Marietta Moses of Blue Springs, MO survives her. She attended Yonkers Public Schools and Girl’s Vocational at P.S. #18. On August 25, 1945, she married the love of her life, Charlie Prota. They shared 60 wonderful years together until his passing in 2005.  She is survived by her two daughters, Phyllis Pulley and her husband Phil of Ojai, CA. and Bernadette Narog and her husband Richard of Yonkers, N.Y. along with 3 grandchildren-Marlo Jean Duncan of La Conchita, CA., Lori (Steven) Kretz of Weaubleau, MO., grandson Richard Charles Narog of Yonkers, N.Y. and six great-granddaughters, Hannah, Sephie, Tay, Havie, Nevie,  Nia and one great-grandson Logan Kretz and many nieces and nephews.
