Yonkers Police Agility Tests Anathema to Fiscal Crisis BY HEZI ARIS

May 31, 2010, Yonkers, NY -- The Yonkers Tribune last week learned Civil Service Commissioner Victor Pacheco had scheduled physical Agility Tests for June 6 and June 13, 2010, respectively. These tests are given to potential future Yonkers Police employees.  The Yonkers Police Department advise they are without a civil service list for the position of Police Officer at this time, stressing the need to establish a certified list of eligible candidates and noting that once conducted, the tests are regarded valid for 4 years duration. The agility tests suggest a future “plan" for employment while City Hall is adamant about needing to reduce YPD costs by firing present staff.

Before I make my comments, I want to announce that the O’Silas Gallery at Concordia College is continuing the Memorial Day tradition of honoring our veterans with an exhibit called “The Hero Next Door” which tells the stories of 70 veterans from Tuckahoe, Eastchester and Bronxville.  The exhibit is open today from 10AM until 5PM and will be open Thursday through Sunday from now until July 5th.

The Petition: Mayor Amicone, Stop the Yonkers Police Layoffs Now!

  Please sign the petition started by the Captains, Lieutenants, Sergeants Association (CLSA) that appeals to City Hall to put an end to the draconian cuts to the Yonkers Police Department. If the mayor has his way the police department will be cut to a manpower level not seen since the 1980's. With violent crime rampant on our streets and our proximity to New York City (the number one terror target in the world), CLSA feel that we will not be able to properly protect our residents if these layoffs and demotions are implemented.  It's not just a long weekend: Memorial Day marks a moment of remembrance for those who have given their lives in defense of our country in days past, and present.  With the thousandth service casualty in Afghanistan reached last week, we're reminded that every day, we are served with more sacrifice on our behalf.  It's humbling.

Harris Beach has become a revered Amackassin Club and “Family and Friends" network hideout. Harris Beach also employs present Yonkers Mayor Phil Amicone’s son Joseph Amicone. Present Corporation Counsel Mark Blanchard, a former Harris Beach alumnus, was the former Deputy Corporation Counsel under Frank Rubino. There is nothing illegal about this scenario other than it stinks.

     Readers of this blog know that for the last several years, our reports on New York State government, particularly its legislature, have conveyed a pathetic picture. Some legislators are now convicted criminals, another is being sued by the Attorney General, some are under investigation, and it would be no surprise if other miscreants are found who have so far escaped the attention of law enforcement authorities.

May 28, 2010, Albany, NY -- Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins announced that every State park and historic site will be open Memorial Day weekend, for the entire summer and well into next year. Senate Democrats were able to negotiate an agreement to restore full funding for all parks, fulfilling their promise to keep parks, campgrounds, historic sites and botanical gardens open for New York’s families.

 May 28, 2010, Yonkers, NY -- On 05-27-10 at approximately 9:05 p.m., members of the Street Crime Unit including Police Officers John Daugherty and Robert Devitt were assigned to plain clothes duty and were patrolling the area of St. Casmir Avenue in response to several robberies which had recently occurred.  The officers observed a male (later identified as Clayton L. Truss) walking toward memorial field holding a brown cigar wrapper in one hand  and a clear plastic bag allegedly containing marijuana in his other hand.

May 28, 2010, White Plains, NY -- “Four Loko” and “Johnny Bootlegger” are relatively new malt alcoholic beverages that are being sold in local convenience stores and bodegas.  These are alcoholic beverages that contain about 11-12% alcohol but can easily be mistaken for “Energy Drinks.”
