New York, NY -- May 2, 2010 --The New York Police Department evacuated Times Square shortly after 6:30 pm Saturday night after finding a sport utility vehicle smoking and a New York Fire Fighter observing a small flash emanating from the car, which was extinguisehed. No injuries have been reported. Propane bottles, gasoline cans, black powder, and what seems to be a timing device were found inside the vehicle. The Connecticut license plate on the Nissan Pathfinder did not match the vehicle identification number (VIN) affixed to the car and no suspects have yet to be apprehended. the vehicle was parked on West 45th Street near Seventh Avenue, not far from the theater where "The Lion King" is performed.
NYPD evacuated residential and commercial buildings in the immediate vicinity and have cleared and kept thousands of locals and tourists from the scene.
Mayor Michael Bloomberg, attending the White House Correspondents’ Dinner in Washington, D.C., is known to be returning to New York City.
