Councilmember McDow Remembers Yonkers’ Enslaved Africans

Yonkers, NY -- Yonkers City Councilwoman Patricia McDow will conduct an intimate ceremony in the vicinity of 50 North Broadway on Friday, May 1, 2009 at 5:30pm to acknowledge and honor the lives of freed Yonkers enslaved Africans that remained with their former owner, the Philipse family, until their deaths in reflection over Yonkers role in the abolition of slavery.

 

McLaughlin Demands Board of Education Cooperate with Inspector General’s Inquiry

White Plains, NY -- Lev L. Dassin, (pictured) the Acting United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York, and Joseph M. Demarest Jr., the Assistant Director in Charge of the New York Field Division of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, announced today that Jose Quinoy, a Detective with the Sleepy Hollow, N.Y., Police Department, has been indicted on two counts of violating civil rights through the use of excessive force. Quinoy was arrested today in Sleepy Hollow.

In Memoriam: Marie J. Sweet (nee Torrence) Tuman

Marie J. Sweet (nee Torrence) Tuman, 72 of   Yonkers, NY. On Saturday, April 25, 2009 a true angel on earth received her wings, Marie passed surrounded by her loving family, after a courageous battle with cancer. Beloved mother of Andrew C. (Lucia) Tuman, and stepdaughter Deborah (Richard) Brandt. Cherished grandmother of Jessica and Keith Tuman and Richard and Christopher Brandt. Loving sister of Florence ("Tookie") (Albert) Stasiak, and many nieces and nephews. Predeceased by her son Edward Adam Tuman Jr., mother Marie Torrence, and her sister Alice D'Aqulia. Marie was known affectionately as Grandma Sweet to many, she was born and raised in Yonkers, NY by her mother Marie Torrence, and her father Floyd Torrence. Marie, also known as Susie, graduated Commerce High School and worked for the City of  Yonkers most of her life, retiring as a Supervisor of the Yonkers Water Billing Dept., where she received many accommodations and was loved by her co-workers. After retiring, Marie traveled the world; always making time for a neighbor and fellow parish members at St. Denis R. C. Church, where she enjoyed serving on the Parish Council. Marie was truly special and unique, loved by all she met, always ready with a smile and believed in hugs, not a hand shake! She will be truly missed by many. Examining the Budget Vis-à-vis Education, School Resource Officers, and Overtime By Hezi Aris

Yonkers, NY – Police Benevolent Association President Detective Eddie Armour (2nd from right), PBA Vice-President Keith Olson (3rd from right), flanked by Yonkers Captains, Lieutenants and Sergeants Association President Thomas Phelan (right), and Yonkers City Council Majority Leader and Education Chair Sandy Annabi (left) stood before the 4th Precinct, across the street from Gorton High School, called for the restoration of a specialized police units and additional funding to ameliorate alleged increased school crime statistics that plague many middle and high schools. The $16 million mid-year financial shortfall divulged by Mayor Phil Amicone in December 2008 has lessened the school district’s ability to deliver an environment conducive to learning. Just as disturbing is the animosity and enmity that has culminated in growing violence by students and gangs upon each other. The Yonkers Public School district is mum on this issue, hiding behind Mayor Amicone’s defense of his required cutbacks, despite the shootings on school property, and the beatings of students on school premises that too often are taken beyond school property. Only last week a student was physically beaten into unconsciousness on a bus by gang members who followed him on his way home. No mention of this cruelty has been addressed by YPS Superintendent Bernard Pierorazio.

Anti-tax Rally Diminished by Lack of Direction By Hezi Aris

White Plains, NY

– The call to protest the continuing tax burden was the rallying cry. Few could disagree with the statistic that Westchester County was the most taxed community in the nation. The crowd of attendees held many perspectives as to why they were there. The majority came to protest the tax increases; uncertain what their participation would garner. The statistics were irrefutable, yet would could or would transpire by the rally being held. The confusion was exacerbated by the lack of clarity between those who were desirous of lightened tax burden and those who espouse the elimination of Westchester County government. Additional confusion was realized when the revised vision called for less county government, but not its complete removal. Despite the meandering message, those that had attended yesterday’s rally demanded to be respected; they would be heard and seen and be noted. The rally was taped for posterity by the police.
