Many years have receded into the pages of history decrying Yonkers stagnation. In the last 13 years Yonkers seemingly began the process of reinventing itself by adopting the concept of economic development to grow out of its self-induced lethargy. A “can do” attitude was rekindled. Plans were set in place. Rather than being extinguished, the flickering flame within Yonkers shone brighter, infusing the city with purpose.

Looks Ahead to Passing Paid Family Leave Act in New York
The Bronx, NY -- Senator Jeff Klein (D-Bronx/Westchester) applauded the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, declaring it a "victory" for equal rights.
On Thursday, President Obama signed the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, a law named for an Alabama woman who at the end of a 19-year career as a supervisor in a tire factory complained that she had been paid less than men.

“I was very disappointed that there was not one Republican vote in the entire House of Representatives for the stimulus package with our nation’s economy teetering on a full-fledged depression. President Obama reached out to them – just as he promised he would. The President showed true leadership in putting party politics aside and putting the needs of our country first. Presents Proposal to Save State $1.1 Billion

Albany, NY -- Yesterday, Deputy Majority Leader, Senator Jeff Klein (D-Bronx/Westchester), addressed the annual luncheon of the influential Health Care Association of New York State (HANYS). Klein spoke to the crowd of roughly 500, emphasizing that although the state faces a multi-million dollar deficit, health care-which accounts for over 40% of the budge- is a top priority for the Senate. The health care industry employs roughly half a million New Yorkers, including 38% of working people in The Bronx and 13% in Westchester, and continues to be a growing sector in a receding economy.

Oswiecim, Poland -- Holocaust survivors and world leaders have held an emotional ceremony in Poland, 60 years after the liberation of the Nazis' Auschwitz death camp.

85 Court Street Officially Named for Fallen Mt. Vernon Officer

White Plains, NY -- On Sunday, January 25, 2009, the county dedicated the 85 Court Street plaza for Christopher A. Ridley, the Mount Vernon resident and police officer slain on the plaza last January. Officer Ridley was off duty when he happened upon and intervened in an altercation in progress outside the county’s social services office building. County Executive Andy Spano proposed renaming the plaza to honor Officer Ridley, a motion the County Board approved at its meeting last week.
