Son of Yonkers Mayor Amicone's Chief of Staff Lisa Mrijaj Resigns Employement, is Arrested, and Released to His Own Recognizance
YONKERS, NY -- Nikolli Mrijaj, son of Yonkers Mayor
Phil
Amicone’s Chief of Staff Lisa Mrijaj, until April 24, 2008, employed by the City of Yonkers since June 20, 2003, was arrested for perpetrating an alleged fraud. He is alleged to have issued a false building permit to construct a sidewalk. Normal canvassing procedures by City of Yonkers employees of construction sites uncovered the false documentation. Yonkers Tribune acid-tongued bloggers tracking the circumstances about this issue for over two-weeks time, has been advised that the alleged circumstances were brought directly to the police so as to sidestep any perceived mitigation of the alleged facts by City Hall; a fact disputed by Mayor Phil Amicone as quoted below. The incendiary situation brought directly to the police caused the quick removal of Mr. Mrijaj from his responsibilities as an Environmental Maintenance Worker, which paid $56,825.00, and his subsequent arrest. He has since been released to his own recognizance.

According to payroll records, Nikolli Mrjijaj held the title of Environmental Maintenance Worker (EMW) in the DPW Water Shop, designated "permanent status." EMW jobs are recognized as one of many political patronage arenas throughout Yonkers that require no civil service test taking. Payroll records show he was paid at least through the April 4 payroll out of the departmental charge.
Yonkers
Mayor Philip A. Amicone said, "As Mayor, I was disheartened to learn of
the arrest of Nick Mrijaj, the son of my Chief of Staff, due to actions
that involved his job with the City of Yonkers. Once we learned of the nature of the accusations, we immediately referred the matter to the Yonkers Police Department.
"He has resigned his position and he will proceed through our court system,” continued Mayor Amicone.
"On
a personal note,” Mayor Amicone said, “my wife and I know the Mrijaj
family for many years; they are good and hardworking people and, as
parents, we support
them in this troubled time."
Chief of
Staff Lisa Mrijaj said, "Even a mother's love can not excuse or condone
what my son, Nick, is accused of. I am disappointed in his lack of
good judgment. As with many other young adults he will be going
through the criminal justice system and will have to deal with the
consequences of his actions. As his mother, I love him and will
support him through this process."

This is what happens when you hire: Family, friends and friends of friends. This mayor is a JACKASSS.

Ah! finally back to the Yonkers we know and love so well.

Why is a maintenance man of such short tenure making 57k when many, many, kids graduating college make far less? The above poster is wrong, the mayor is not a "jackass" the taxpayers and voters are.

I can spin my little tale but most times I fail
I'm a young one and cannot leave my mother.

Was a civil service test required for this job? Edelman seemed to think it was, or maybe he was just guessing. It does pay a lot for a young guy without a degree. He was hired at age 20. But Spencer was the KING of the friends and family and other patronage hires. He was KING of the city cars, too. Right now, with the money situation the way it is, any not well-qualified patronage hires should go, and that might include some of Nick Spano's refugees.

I hear amicone said " this guy doesn't have a chinaman's chance of getting his job back but at least he's not a backroom goombah"

If he was an Environmental Maintenance Worker why was he issuing permits? Seems like everything this administration blamed others for is coming right back at them.

Can we blame Petrone on this one also?

Will Blanchard be his lawyer?

John Meyer is this young man's boss.
He should resign or be fired - immediately
Posted by: | May 02, 2008 at 02:52 PM
Better yet, Amicone is Meyer's boss.
They should both resign - immediately.

Touche.

Meyer is afraid of his own shadow. Look he let Regan sick him with that obnoxious yenta McCarthy.

What am I missing here...did this guy work as a maintenance man for the Bldg. Dept. or was he with DPW?
Posted by: | May 02, 2008 at 03:39 PM
Question: Did this guy work as a maintenance man for the Bldg. Dept. or was he with DPW?
Answer: City Hall will never tell you the truth -
Posted by: | May 02, 2008 at 03:59 PM
Here is the answer.
Whatever his title was, this young man sat front & center in the Building Department every day.
The permit in question probably had something to do with that department.
If so, that makes Meyer responsible as it does his boss, Amicone.

Have you, Yonkers Citizens, had enough yet ?
Posted by: | May 02, 2008 at 04:53 PM
I think the City of Yonkers should look into who else was hired. Obviously, Lisa Mrijaj was giving top notch city jobs to family. I'm sure she has some more of her family working somewhere around the city.
News 12 Westchester said that Nick Mrijaj also accepted a $400 bribe to make this bogus permit. I think the city should investigate some workers and how they got there.
After reading other comments, others stated that Nick doesnt even have a college degree. Should I have saved my money and not went to college and freeloaded off my familys connects like Nick did? I'm over the age of 30 and I have a bachelors degree and I was turned down for a position working for the city of Yonkers. Makes you think about how legeit our Yonkers government is.

Don't think he took bribes. Instead, what may have happened is that people thought they were paying for a legit permit, but he gave them a forgery. If that is what happened, more people may now come forward wondering if their permits are real. Who knows how often he did it? Probably more than the one time he got caught.
