NYS Senator Stewart-Cousins to be Challenged to Represent the 35th Senate District By Hezi Aris
NYS Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins
YONKERS, NY -- The Hon. Nick Spano’s declaration that he would not seek the office of the 35th Senate District has opened the gate to other potential candidates that would vie to challenge Senator Andrea-Stewart-Cousins.

Minority Leader Liam McLaughlin
Two Republican names have risen to
the forefront among inside circles. Yonkers City Council Minority
Leader Liam McLaughlin (District-4), and Yonkers City Councilman John
Murtagh
(District-5). Councilman John Murtagh
It has not been formally concluded, but it would be fair to say that the two contenders will reach an understanding upon how to move the challenge forward. At the moment, the likelihood of a primary fight between the two lawyers in nil to none.
A hefty bankroll, one that Albany is said to be willing to finance, goes far toward launching a credible assault against incumbent Senator Stewart-Cousins. The money being recognized the carrot, at issue is the stick.
Will McLaughlin or Murtagh convince Albany he is the more seasoned?
Has Hartsdale’s Mary Mahon’s exploratory committee found her efforts worthy of viably contending for the office?
Emerging from conjecturing about the field, and coming to a consensus among all the protagonists is the first challenge to the Westchester Republicans.

I think Mickey Mouse would do a better job than any of the contenders announced so far, and that includes the incumbent!

You have to be kdding to think that McKaughlin is a viable candidate.
Isn't he the one that got so bent out of shape that Murtagh was listening to the concerns of Greenburgh residents during the Ridge Hill project?
Greenburgh residents will surely be reminded of that if he ever gets the nomination.
Let's say goodbye to McLaughlin the same way we said goodbye to Spencer
Ignore him

True enough. Murtaugh is far more interested in the concerns of Greenburgh than McLaughlin ever was. But McLaughlin is more concerned about the resident of Yonkers. I live in Yonkers. Who should I support?

Just like his support of the Democrat in last year's mayoral race, Liam's #1 goal this year is to beat up Murtagh so Andrea Stewart Cousins is re-elected.

Nice headline, Hezi. For a fleeting moment, I thought YOU were challenging Andrea.
Posted by: | May 09, 2008 at 03:27 PM
Hezi should run !!! He has my vote.

I think Mahon is the best choice here. Smart, experienced and principled, but at the same time a new face. Nick was a great Senator who cared about the district and Mary can deliver the same for the whole district.

How about Mary Calvi for senator!!!!!

Mike Spano has been subpoenaed by the US Attorney re: Ridge Hill. It's on Snooze 12, and he doesn't look too thrilled.
Posted by: | May 09, 2008 at 04:52 PM
4:52 He looked like a deer in the headlights. He is dumb enough of to be caught in the middle of all this.

If you read today's Journal News article, it looks like Annabi probably is going to be indicted for at least mortgage fraud. At least. Her lawyer, "Don't Worry" Murray Richman, let that cat out of the bag. Betcha he leaked the entire story to set the table and proclaim her innocence.
The "mortgage" angle is where Melvin Lowe might enter the picture. The Feds have been interested in him. He was a consultant for either the Council or Ratner. If he did something wrong, he would have been freelancing it.

5:20 If Mike Spano was a go between, my guess it wasn't the developer,it was more likely the unions involved in the construction or the contractors getting the job.Ratner would be too smart and sophisticated for an outright cash payoff.

andrea will get more republican votes than murtagh if he were the nominee. murtagh is a crook.

Somone is trying to get the topic off Mike Spano, and perhaps off Nick Spano and Annabi too.

There was a story going around that both Spanos and Spencer were seen meeting with a Union on Midland Avenue.
Maybe they are going after that angle with Mike
Posted by: | May 09, 2008 at 06:31 PM
Spencer was summoned to the US Attorney's office weeks ago. That is true.
Posted by: | May 09, 2008 at 09:15 PM
PS to the 9:15 comment---I meant it is true that Spencer was summoned to the US Attorney's office some weeks ago. But don't know about the rumored meeting between Spencer, the Spanos and a union official.
But Spencer was a consultant for Milio Managment and also for Mangone's law firm (Santangelo.) Mangone is the lawyer for Milio. Milio's Longfellow-School Six project is one of those being investigated by the US Attorney.

LIAM MCLAUGHLIN IS THE BEST WE HAVE NOW! NICK SPANO WOULD HAVE BEEN GREAT IF HE RAN BUT NOW WE NEED SOMEONE THAT WILL FIGHT HARD FOR US. THAT'S LIAM.

i agree liam will make a great senator

I would think Liam would be backing Stewart-Cousins like he backed Democrat Robertson. No real republicans will vote for a Republican in a primary who just backed a Democrat for mayor against a Republican mayor.I believe he also backed the candidate running against Murtagh for the council race.
Posted by: | May 09, 2008 at 10:35 PM
McLaughlin will not win anything. He is widely disliked, he is hooked up with Spencer, who is widely disliked, and he supported Robertson, the DEMOCRAT, in the general election and Restiano in the primary. She is widely disliked. Liam backed Mosiello against Murtagh too. She got about 20 votes.
Mike Spano's grand jury subpoena story is now on the Journal News website and will be in the paper tomorrow. He is to appear May 20. The Feds asked him about Al Pirro, etc.
But Mike claims he, himself did no lobbying even though he worked for a lobbying firm! He claims he only sought to learn what the objections to Ridge Hill were. As if Ratner didn't already know. Not too cool, Mikey.

barbato and murtagh backed DEMOCRAT LESNICK against rich martinelli, so in yonkers its normal for republicans to back democrats, things have gotten so bad where republicans dee and rich barbato have political appointments with democrats spano and iodoni.

turns out everything i said the other
day is coming true...I know who the targets
are ...they are being served subpoenas on
a daily basis...and there is clearly some
criminal act that has been committed..
the issue will be connecting the mortgage
fraud with the development vote...may be
not so easy to do
Posted by: the inside scoop | May 10, 2008 at 09:44 AM
Was Nick Spano served a subpoena?
How about John Spencer?
Does anyone know if any union officals were also served?

It might be wise not to limit the scope of this in one's mind. "Mortgage fraud" can involve many things, some Federal. There could be some surprise names in this when it goes down. Some of those names might not even be directly connected to government. But the main "persons of interest" remain who they were from Day One. But others have been drawn in as the Feds kept digging.
