YONKERS - A downtown business improvement district may have violated its bylaws in appointing a high-profile developer's representative to its board of directors.
Officials of the Yonkers Downtown/Waterfront Business Improvement District appointed Peter G. Klein to its board in late 2006, even though the group's rules reserve such positions for property owners within the district. Klein is vice president of the Fidelco Realty Group, a member of the Struever Fidelco Cappelli partnership that is proposing a billion-dollar redevelopment plan for downtown.
At the time of his appointment neither Klein nor Fidelco owned property within the district, though SFC has proposed building within the organization's boundaries.
On Thursday John Kolenda, who led the BID board at the time of Klein's appointment, said Klein had worked hard for the BID, but he declined to comment on whether Klein's accession to the board conformed to the group's bylaws.
Klein was unavailable for comment Friday, and Geoff Thompson, a spokesman for SFC, declined to comment on Klein's appointment.
"The commitment was made at the opening announcement (of redevelopment proposal) that we would make a concerted effort to involve the community and be as transparent as possible," Thompson said.
In July, the Greyston Foundation, a property owner in the district, wrote a letter to the BID designating Klein as its representative. On March 13, the BID elected new board members, including Klein, who will continue representing that nonprofit.
Greyston's president, Steven Brown, was unavailable to explain why Klein was designated as Greyston's representative.
Concerns about the legitimacy of Klein's presence on the board were communicated to The Journal News by two property owners around the time of the board election.

2008 BID Board Elections
The slate as presented was elected; there was one nomination from the floor.
Below are the results from the biannual election of the YDWBID Board of Directors that took place on Thursday, March 13th at the 2008 BID Annual Meeting at the Roosevelt Ballroom:
Class A Slate: Ayuso: 39; Carmichael: 39; Dearden: 40; Klein: 36; Leggio: 39; Pinto: 39; Sprayregen: 39.
Nominated from the floor: Debra Cohen (CH Martin): 5
Three (3) ballots were disqualified as they had 8 votes. On the Class A ballot, it was clearly stated that
“If a ballot contains more than seven (7) votes, it will be disqualified.”
Class B: There were no nominations from the floor from Class B and a single vote from Secretary Pinto for the Class B slate of Bouet and Metrena was cast.

Hope someone can tell us the number of attendees at this thing tonight

How sad and how negative.
If its 20, 50 or 500, it is still an attempt to use a grand ballroom and if it doesn't work something else will probably be tried. It never works the first time, you build on it and events such as this become word of mouth. Thank you for sitting by, monitoring things, and not showing up.
Would you prefer that nothing be done anywhere in the downtown? At least people are given an opportunity to attend something and get together at a reasonable cost.
What was nice is that this newspaper apparently did a lot to try to advertise and support it and some dance studios across the city helped out too. They try to help with positives in this city.
Hezi should be thanked for his participation.
People are at least trying something new out.

Was this held in that place where millions of tax dollars were sunk?? Spare us the lecture about positives and negatives. The taxpayer is still paying for the "mortgage" on this property.
All comments welcome. But thanks for your input City Haul Troll.

Dear How Sad and Negative: You sound like this is the first time anything was tried in the ballroom! Where have you been for the past few years? Did you come to events at PPAC? Things have been happening in the downtown for a long time - we had great jazz and films on the waterfront with hundreds of people showing up, a Saturday market, arts festivals and an art gallery. At least it's kept clean. Who knew about this event? Things have been going backwards, especially in the last year or so.

I think you have it wrong. The jazz at the pier was moved this year and had quadruple the people it had in the past, you didn't have to walk so far. The Riverfest that was dead for years was brought back and tripled in attendance. It is one of the most popular events in the County people look forward to.
And although the market was nice, no one came, it failed. Maybe another one will be tried in the future. Same for PPAC, nice but it fell apart totally, things might have been too expensive for the population.
As for an event like this, it builds and if you are so inclined to have attended it was posted on this website which you apparently read, so you should have gone. I am sure it was fine. Everyone gets credit for trying, the past year ago things are starting to happen again after a lull.

how many attended?
Posted by: | March 31, 2008 at 09:51 AM
GUESS THERE WAS NO RESPONSE FROM ANYONE ON THE NUMBER OF PEOPLE WHO ATTENDED THIS EVENT.
WONDER HOW MUCH TAXPAYER'S MONEY WENT INTO THIS EVENT?
